PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Three Rhode Island schools were named as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2017, the U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday.

Classical High School in Providence and Community Elementary School in Cumberland were recognized as exemplary high-performing schools, and Fishing Cove Elementary School in North Kingstown was recognized as exemplary for closing achievement gaps.

“Our success as a state, economically and otherwise, relies on education, and our Blue Ribbon Schools serve as a model for how we can improve outcomes for all schools and all students," Gov. Gina M. Raimondo said in congratulating the winners.

More than 8,500 public schools have won the distinction in the program's 34 years. The winners will be celebrated at an event in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 6 and 7.
