Dr. Donnie W. Evans, Ed.d
Superintendent
Providence School Department
797 Westminster Street
Providence, RI 02903
Dear Dr. Evans;
On Tuesday, August 14, 2007 the Providence
Journal published an article entitled Even with cuts to school budget,
Evans looking forward.
In said article, you are quoted as hoping to achieve several new goals during
this academic year. Some of your new goals require teacher participation.
You should be aware that teachers are already performing many of the tasks
you mention. In addition, several goals require more teacher participation
and the present Collective Bargaining Agreement contains no language which
addresses these increased responsibilities.
The article concludes by mentioning the huge frustrating challenge of trying
to move a district forward in an era of diminishing resources. In fact,
you are quoted as saying How can we continue to make progress with
the same amount of money?
I ask you Dr. Evans, how can we continue to make progress with the same
teachers contract in place and fulfill your new teacher duties? Why
have negotiations stalled? Why havent we met since May 22, 2007 despite
promises that we would reconvene talks once the budget was set?
I am prepared to meet around the clock, if necessary, to get a new contract
in place prior to the start of school. Please advise as to your availability.
Sincerely,
Steven F. Smith
