Letter to Dr. Evans - Grievances Filed in October 2007

November 5, 2007

Dr. Donnie W. Evans

Superintendent of Schools

Providence School Department

797 Westminster Street

Providence, RI  02903

Dear Dr. Evans:

The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a comparison of the number and type of grievances filed during the month of October 2007 compared to the month of October 2006.

Grievances filed                                                     2006-07                    2007-08

                                                                                    19                                70

Major Categories

  • Unfair & Inequitable Treatment                    0                                  22
  • Plant Maintenance                                       3                                  17
  • Supplies & Equipment                                2                                  11
  • Professional Development                           2                                  11

As you can see, the number of grievances filed during October 2007 when compared to the number of grievances filed during October 2006 represents a significant increase.

In addition to being an indication of low morale and lack of job satisfaction among Providence teachers, the significant number of grievances filed is creating a serious back-log in terms of grievance hearings.

Sincerely,

Steven F. Smith
